Test of Time Grand Haven High School Athletics welcomes Jason Tester and his family. Tester, previously coached high school defenses in Georgia for the past decade, is a Muskegon Catholic Central graduate and former assistant coach. Tester was also defensive coordinator at Northview prior to his move down south. Tester played linebacker and tight end at Catholic, finishing his career as a captain on Mike Holmes’ first state-title winning squad in 1990. He got into coaching early, accepting an assistant coaching spot at his alma mater in 1991. The Crusaders laid the foundation for his coaching career and life as husband and father. Tester went on to coach at Northview for eight years, eventually becoming the Wildcats’ defensive coordinator. He and wife Carissa, both of whom are social studies teachers, moved to Covington, Georgia in 2006. Education jobs were hard to find in Michigan at the time, and Tester was able to obtain a position as defensive coordinator at Eastside High School. The Eagles were a fledgling program, having lost 24 games in a row according to Tester. He was able to help turn the squad around, with Eastside advancing to the state semifinals in 2009. Coach Tester had similar success at St. Plus X in Atlanta, where he was secondary coach and defensive coordinator in waiting. The Golden Lions made the state quarterfinals twice and were runner-up once in his three years with the program. Tester had just started to take over for retired defensive coordinator Jerry Stewart this spring, but it didn’t last for long. That’s when the Grand Haven position opened up
