The Grand Haven Buccaneers return to Gene Rothi Field and Buccaneer Stadium tonight to take on the Grandville Bulldogs for the opening of the O-K Red portion of the Bucs schedule. Grand Haven is looking to shake off last week’s loss on the road at Traverse City West, 41-14. The Titans were able to dominate the game on the ground, outgaining the Bucs 421-96 in rushing yards. After a scoreless 1st quarter, the Titans exploded for three scores, all with two-point conversions, to take a 24-0 lead. Grand Haven did get on the board late in the first half, as Colin Takas hauled in an Adam Nelson pass for a 29-yard touchdown, to make the score 24-7 at halftime. The Titans would continue the ground attack in the second half, scoring twice the opening minutes of the second half to take control of the contest. After a fourth quarter TC West field goal, the Bucs would add a late touchdown run of 19 yards from Tristan Winkleman to make the final score 41-14. Nelson finished the contest 9-17 passing for 98 yards and a touchdown. Malic Love led the Bucs defense with nine tackles, while Kellum Bridgeforth had seven and Charlie Young had six. The Bulldogs come in to tonight’s contest 1-1 on the season after finishing last season 10-2 and co-champs of the O-K Red. Grandville opened the season with a resounding 53-13 victory over Holt, but were shut out last week at home 31-0 by Warren De La Salle. Last season, the Bucs fell at Grandville 53-8, though Grandville graduated many seniors from that district championship squad. Among the leaders back this year for Grandville are senior running back Shane Baker and junior Bryce Sanderson. The Bulldogs employ a Wing-T style offense that will look similar to what the Bucs saw last week against Traverse City West. “Grandville is a very tough team. Really old school-traditional, running downhill offense,” Buccaneer coach Joe Nelson said. “They just wait for you to make a mistake.” After the game, be sure to tune in to WGHN 92.1 FM to hear coach Nelson’s thoughts on the game and stop by the Stable Inn on Monday for the Grand Haven Coach’s Show with Joe Nelson and WGHN’s Matt Tjapkes from 7-8 p.m.
